The SONIC Drive-In Story and the Winterringer Family History
SONIC Drive-In, founded by Troy Smith and originally named Top Hat Drive-In, began in 1953 as a hamburger and root beer stand in Shawnee, Oklahoma. SONIC’s introduction and unique use of curbside speakers allowed Guests to place food orders without ever leaving their cars. This innovation spawned the slogan, “Service with the Speed of Sound” and a new name in 1959: SONIC Drive-In.
Brian’s grandfather O.K. Winterringer was Troy Smith’s landlord and his attorney who wrote the first franchise agreement in 1959. Brian’s father, Jim Winterringer, also a Shawnee attorney, helped shaped SONIC corporate in the 1970’s. Brian and his brother John joined the family business Wintco, Inc. in the 1980’s.
Today, Wintco operates 20 SONIC Drive-ins located in Oklahoma, Texas and Idaho. Brian and his wife Candice
